Solihull Approach – 2 Day Foundation Training Opportunity

November 19, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

We are excited to share information about our roll out an extensive 2 day training programme throughout Tayside for all practitioners working with pregnant women and families with children in their early years in Tayside.

The Solihull Approach is a UK project developed in 2001 by a team led by Dr Hazel Douglas MBE, a Psychotherapist and Psychologist who was the head of Child Psychology in Solihull. She originally developed the model whilst working with a team of Health Visitors, Child and Adolescent Mental Health services and families.

The Solihull Approach aims to increase the emotional health and wellbeing of children and families, ensuring children have a good emotional start in life whilst supporting parents in a creative and consistent approach.

The Solihull Approach helps parents process their own emotions and anxieties allowing them to cope with and focus more clearly on how to assist their children’s emotions, anxieties and behaviours.

It looks at 3 main concepts:

Containment – The beginning of the process, the calmness in the face of a storm. Parents are supported to process the situation and listen and take in the whole picture. Containment gives the parents a calm, safe, secure environment in order to ensure they are appropriately and emotionally equipped to support their children through difficult periods. It builds on relationship and secure attachment.
Reciprocity – Being in tune with each other, the building blocks of relationship and positive interaction, the communication dance. Parents are supported to consider why their child is acting in such a way and are encouraged to see things from the child’s perspective, so building a secure and stable relationship for each.
Behaviour Management – supporting children in self-regulation, self-control and boundaries. Encouraging children’s positive behaviour through positive modelling, consistency and the importance of predictability

The Solihull Approach is now used across the UK and across the world by midwives to firefighters, schools, homes, hospitals and prisons.

The training course is free to attend but spaces are limited and booking is essential.

Please note the second date for this training session will be Tuesday December 3 from 9am-4pm at Arbroath High School.  Delegates must attend both days.
